A character starting in proph can run pretty much whatever they want.
Henchmen and/or other players (if they aren't too stupid) can usually make up for any inadequecies in the human's build.
My first char (a N/W) was quite happy slashing his way to Maguuma with a sword in hand. Only then did I realise that perhaps focusing on a caster line was a better idea. It was unfortunate that I picked the blood line though and continued to use that for a good while.

A necromancer in prophecies will have little need to delve into the elementalist line. By all means, do so, but you won't achieve anything more by doing so.
